"I SHOULDN'T EVEN BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW..."

WHEN HIS UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH HIM, BILL JANKE FACED THE STARKEST CHOICE POSSIBLE: CHANGE, OR DIE.

THE BEGINNING

As a child, I was pretty active. I was even considered small for my age. At around 8 years old, though, I started to get heavier. I had become an emotional eater, and while I tried to stay active my diet made weight gain inevitable. Before long I came to accept that I was “the fat kid”.

Knowing this, I was faced with the choice between changing or embracing it. The emotional toll of this realization only led to more eating—which led to more weight gain—and that came to define my life for years. By the time I hit my 30s, I was well over 400 pounds.

MY LIFESTYLE WAS GOING TO KILL ME

I developed a host of health problems, like high blood pressure and sleep apnea. The sleep apnea presented the greatest risk to my health, as I was chronically exhausted. One night I injured myself dozing off at the wrong moment, and realized how much worse it could have been—how much worse it would be, if I didn’t change.

The reality sank in that I was 31 years old and my obesity and destructive lifestyle were going to possibly send me to an early grave. I decided right then and there that I wanted to make a lifestyle change that would hopefully get me out of the hole that I had dug myself into for over 25 years.

What I Didn’t Know About Dieting Right

Like many people, however, the early stages of my path to a healthier life included some confusion and stumbling. I was convinced that the secret to weight loss lay in a low-calorie diet, I had started out dropping to 3,000 calories from as much as 10,000 calories per day, but at one point had cut back to as low as 15% of my previous intake. Quick results were short-lived, and my progress slowed to a crawl.

I was only doing low-impact water aerobics and the like at the time, but even then I felt myself lagging during workouts, and exhausted throughout the day. Something was off, and so I began researching everything I could on nutrition.

A Good Training Program Makes All the Difference

Just before then, I had started exercising with a longtime friend. He mentioned he had just started using Jim Stoppani's programs and asked if I would join him while he was in the middle of the Super-Man program. Before long, we'd completed Super-Man, Jim's Giant Program, Six Weeks to Sick Arms, and The Daily Grind together. But it wasn’t until I did Super Shredded 8 for one of the Summer Shred Challenges that I stepped my training up to the next level.

The YMCA, where I had been working out, changed their hours for the summer. It was then that I decided to get another gym membership that would allow me access to more equipment and broader hours of operation. I followed Super Shredded 8 to a T, and feel I received my best results from that program. It really turns the casual gym goer into a hardcore, goal-driven individual. For me, that made all the difference.

Education Is the Key to a New and Better Life

My outlook on life has totally changed, now. If there is one thing that has contributed to my success, it is consistency in everything I do. Between the meal prepping, workouts, and supplements, it comes down to consistency and my determination. But I couldn’t have done it without the education I got from Jim Stoppani.

There are no mistakes in life, just lessons learned. I learned a lot of lessons along my journey, and only grew from these lessons. Sometimes, we can rebound quickly; other times, it takes longer. My hope is that people don't have to follow in my footsteps and realize there is a better way right from the beginning.

By educating myself on not only proper nutrition but countless training principles and the science of supplementation, I’ve given myself the gift of a healthier future—instead of no future at all. And as cliche as it is, if I can do it, anyone can.
