Becoming a dad changes everything, especially when it comes to finding time for yourself.
For Andrew King, fatherhood initially meant putting his fitness goals on the back burner. After the birth of his youngest son, workouts started to feel like a selfish act. “Every hour at the gym felt like time I should’ve been helping with the baby or supporting my wife,” he says.
But as the weight slowly crept on, he realized something had to change.
Andrew had always been active—running, martial arts, and lifting—but eating like he was still in peak training mode led to some unwanted weight gain. By the time he hit 250 pounds, Andrew didn’t even recognize himself.
It was time to face reality, and with some gentle nudging from his wife, he made a commitment to turn things around.
His turning point came when he entered the 2024 Shortcut to Shred Challenge on JimStoppani.com.
“I knew I needed to take action,” says Andrew.
He did… and it worked. The structured approach of the Shortcut to Shred program , combined with a major lifestyle shift, became the keys to his success.
The Shortcut to Shred Challenge wasn’t just about weight loss for Andrew; it was about building muscle, shedding fat, and boosting his self-confidence.
Following a high-protein diet and a strict workout plan, Andrew committed to 2,400 calories per day and 250 grams of protein, which was essential in maintaining his muscle mass while losing fat.
“I stopped caring about the scale,” he says. “I liked what I saw in the mirror, and I felt stronger every day.”
This mindset shift was one of the major breakthroughs of Andrew’s journey. The challenge helped him focus less on the numbers and more on how he felt in his body—stronger, healthier, and more energized than he had felt in years.
In just six weeks, Andrew’s hard work paid off in a big way. He lost fat, gained muscle, and completely transformed his body. His dedication and consistency earned him the Shortcut to Shred male grand prize (with Amanda Day winning the female grand prize ). The win paid him $10,000 and a trip to Hollywood to train with Dr. Jim Stoppani and the JYM Team.
One of Andrew's biggest challenges was finding balance between family life and his fitness routine.
"Drinking had always been a part of my lifestyle, but during this challenge I realized there wasn’t space for it if I wanted to succeed," he says
Managing his schedule with a new baby, work, and the need to stay on track with his workouts wasn’t always easy. However, Andrew's commitment and consistency made the difference.
"Cutting [alcohol] out completely for the first time as an adult did wonders for my sleep, recovery, and body composition," Andrew says.
If you’re struggling to find the motivation or the right path to fitness, Andrew’s advice is simple: “Stick to a plan, track your nutrition, and keep pushing yourself to be better every day.”
He also reminds others to “focus on your health, not just the scale”, which is the true key to long-term transformation.
Now that he’s reached his goal weight, Andrew is determined to keep pushing himself. He plans to continue training, improving his strength, and maintaining his lean physique.
“When my son is my age, I’ll be 72. That thought is a huge motivator,” he says.
With his success in the Shortcut to Shred Challenge, it’s clear he’s on the right path—and he’s ready for the next challenge.
