At 42, Chris Burris Stopped "Starting Over"—and Lost 45 Pounds

After years of false starts, heavy drinking, and excuses, the 42-year-old JYM Army member made daily training and disciplined choices part of his life—and changed more than his physique.

At 42, Chris Burris Stopped "Starting Over"—and Lost 45 Pounds

Sometimes a transformation is about more than the exact program and diet, but rather about actually doing it. For Chris Burris, his key to fitness success was utterly simple yet incredibly powerful:

“I transformed because I finally stopped giving myself permission to quit,” he says.

Chris had been part of the JYM Army since 2016. He’d tried programs and challenges including SS8 , Shortcut to Shred , Down and Up Mass , and Shortcut to Size . But for years, he kept finding a reason to stop. He’d get derailed, make excuses, and tell himself he’d get serious tomorrow.

Then, at 42, he ran out of room to keep putting it off.

At his heaviest, Chris weighed 235 pounds. He was drinking heavily, felt horrible every day, and had little drive or motivation. His wife and kids were feeling the effects, too. By December 2025, he decided—and told his wife for accountability—that it was time to get serious.

The changes that followed helped Chris lose roughly 45 pounds and transform his physique. But the biggest shift, he says, was in how he saw himself. “I stopped identifying as someone who started over. I became someone who followed through,” he says.

How Chris Stopped Starting Over

Chris’ first and most important step was taking ownership of the choices he could control. He quit drinking, cleaned up his nutrition, got serious about supplementation, and made daily training non-negotiable.

His diet centered mostly on whole foods. He stopped chasing variety, convenience, and comfort and got used to eating many of the same meals. He and his wife still found ways to make food flavorful, he says, without letting it derail his day or week.

That approach demanded consistency more than novelty. Chris had to keep showing up after the initial resolve wore off—and stay with the habits that supported his goals.

The Daily Training Routine Behind His Weight Loss

Chris committed to training early each morning. He didn’t want his workouts to take time away from his family, so he decided that if anyone’s time had to be used, it would be his own.

Working more than 50 hours a week, marriage, and fatherhood could have supplied plenty of reasons to skip a workout. Instead, Chris made a decision not to let those demands dictate his results.

"I transformed because I finally stopped giving myself permission to quit.”

For Chris, those a.m. sessions became more than just workouts. “Every morning, training is a test,” he says. “It’s another opportunity to prove that discipline is stronger than excuses, discomfort is temporary, and the person I want to become is built through the choices I make when no one is watching.”

Chris’ goal became to be the strongest version of himself—physically, mentally, and spiritually. He decided that being over 40, building a career, and raising a family doesn’t mean you have to become weaker or less capable. It was the exact opposite, actually: They give him more reasons to stay strong.

“My family is my driving force and motivation,” he says. “I want to be a husband my wife is proud of and a father my kids can look up to. I want them to see what commitment looks like—not through what I say, but through what I do every day. I want them to understand that their circumstances don’t have to determine their future and that they can change their direction when they decide to go all in. My faith keeps me grounded, My family gives me purpose and training keeps me accountable.”

How JYM Programs and Supplements Fit His Routine

JYM Supplement Science has been a major part of Chris’ journey. The programs, supplements, structure, and community give him tools to keep pushing, but he knows the decision to use those tools has to be his.

Pre JYM , Pro JYM , Post JYM , JYM Hydration , Omega JYM , Vita JYM , and ZMA JYM all became part of his daily routine. “They support the process,” Chris says, “but the process still demands consistency, discipline, and effort.”

Among the programs he’s used, Down and Up Mass stands out. “I love programs that force you to work, and Down and Up Mass delivers exactly that,” Chris says. “The volume, intensity, progression, and structure demand more than simply showing up. They demand that you earn every result. If I wanted results, I couldn’t coast through this program, hide from the hard sets, or negotiate with the work. I had to earn every workout.”

Why Family Keeps Chris Accountable

At 42, Chris feels like a different man. “I’m stronger, leaner, more disciplined, and more focused than I’ve been in years,” he says. “I went from drinking heavily, making excuses, and slowly destroying myself to building a life I’m proud to live. I went from repeatedly starting over to becoming someone who follows through. I went from trying to change my body to changing my identity.”

“My family is my driving force and motivation. I want to be a husband my wife is proud of and a father my kids can look up to."

He knows the work isn’t finished. Every early morning, disciplined meal, and hard-earned workout is another promise to himself and his family that he’ll keep moving forward.

“I didn’t just get started,” Chris says. “I became someone who refuses to stop.”
