For years, full-body training was treated like a set of training wheels: something beginners used until they were ready for a “real” workout split. Once you learned your way around the gym, the thinking went, you graduated to chest day, back day, leg day, and the rest.
But full-body training doesn’t stop working just because you’re no longer a beginner. When it’s programmed correctly, training every major muscle group in the same session can be just as useful for an experienced lifter—and may offer distinct advantages for fat loss, strength, muscle growth, and overall health.
That doesn’t mean cramming five exercises for every body part into one marathon workout. The basic approach is much simpler: Perform at least one exercise for each major muscle group, then distribute your weekly training volume across multiple sessions. You’ll do less work for each body part on any given day, but you’ll train it more frequently.

One of the biggest advantages of full-body training is the amount of muscle mass you activate in each workout.
In a study involving trained rugby players, researchers compared four weeks of full-body training with four weeks of split-body training. Total training volume was equal between the two protocols, which means the athletes weren’t simply doing more work during the full-body phase.
Both approaches produced results, but full-body training led to greater reductions in body-fat percentage and total fat mass.
The likely advantage comes from activating muscle fibers throughout the entire body in every workout. When you train more muscle mass, you switch on more genes involved in metabolism and create a greater overall energy demand. You’re not just burning calories while you train; your body continues using energy as all those different muscle groups recover.
A typical split workout might activate metabolic processes in only your chest and triceps, for example. A full-body workout creates that demand in your chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs, and other major muscle groups at the same time.
If getting lean is one of your primary goals, that makes full-body training a powerful option.
Build your full-body workout around exercises that train a lot of muscle at once, such as squats, rows, presses, and deadlift variations. The more total muscle mass you activate, the greater the metabolic demand of the session.
