The Secret to Training Progress: Constantly Evolving Your Methods

The importance of changing up your workout to see continued results.

The Secret to Training Progress: Constantly Evolving Your Methods

When I first started training, I followed what I thought was the "perfect" routine.

I stuck to it, day in and day out, convinced that consistency was the key to success.

But over time, I began to realize something that I hadn't considered before: the body adapts to the same workout , and that adaptation can halt progress if you don’t change things up.

The fact is, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to training. Whether you're a bodybuilder, a strength athlete, or just someone looking to get in better shape, the training methods that work for you will change.

And as I’ve learned, even the top athletes are all doing something slightly different. If there was one "best way," they'd all be doing it. But they’re not.

Here’s how to keep evolving so that the results keep coming.

Why Change Is Essential for Progress

Think about it: If there were a perfect program, we’d all be following it.

But the reality is, what works for one person might not work for another. That’s why it’s crucial to switch up your training methods regularly to keep seeing results. This is something I’ve preached for years.

I've switched from High Intensity Training (HIT) to high-volume training and back again. And each time, I saw better results. The key is finding the right rhythm and understanding that what works today might not work tomorrow. You have to be willing to experiment, adjust, and constantly assess your progress.

When people ask me what the best program is, here’s my answer:

The best program is the one you're not doing right now.

If you’re stuck in a routine, it's time to mix it up. Whether it's switching your rep ranges , changing exercises, or even switching training splits , the variation forces your body to adapt, preventing stagnation.

Tracking Progress: More Than Just the Mirror

It’s easy to judge progress by how you look in the mirror, but there are better ways to track your results.

If hypertrophy is your goal, don't just rely on your reflection or the scale. Measure your muscle size or use body fat measurements (skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance, or even a DEXA scan if you can get one).

Strength progress is another great metric. Keep track of how much weight you’re lifting in key exercises like the bench press, squat, and deadlift. The more data you have, the better you can tailor your approach.

And remember, progress isn’t just about size. It's also about performance. How are you feeling in your workouts? Are you recovering well? Are you pushing through plateaus with increased intensity?

These are the indicators that tell you you're on the right track.

Avoiding Overtraining: The Real Issue

The term "overtraining" gets tossed around a lot, but in my experience, it’s usually misused.

Most people don’t overtrain—they simply push their bodies too hard without giving them the recovery they need. Overtraining is a rare condition typically reserved for athletes pushing their limits with grueling daily workouts. For most people, feeling sore or fatigued doesn’t mean you’re overtrained. It means you’ve put in the work.

However, if you don’t give your body the recovery time it needs, you risk burning out.

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, nutrition, and rest between workouts to allow your body to repair and rebuild. This is where periodization—cycling through different phases of intensity and recovery—can really help you avoid overtraining while optimizing your results.
